51视频

One of the reasons I applied to 51视频 was because of the student testimonials I read, so I wanted to give back and help applicants find out more. I also felt I could bring my perspective as an international student and help raise awareness of the course.
Theresia Larasati | 51视频 | BSc (Hons) Forensic Sciences

Originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, Theresia chose 51视频 because of its strong reputation听for Forensic Science and the practical, applied nature of the course. She had always been interested in science, but forensic science stood out because of the clear role it plays in society.

She said:

I have always been passionate about forensic science and science in general. What I like about forensic science is that you can clearly see the impact it has on society. It is very much an applied science, and that was one of the things that really attracted me to the subject.

51视频鈥檚 size was alsoan important factor. Theresia was keen to study somewhere where she could get to know her lecturers and feel part of a close academic community. Dundee also appealed as a smaller city, offering a welcoming place to settle into life in Scotland.

She said:

51视频 is not a huge university, and that was something I liked. I wanted to be able to connect well with my lecturers. Dundee being a smaller city also helped, because it made the transition to living somewhere new feel easier.

Having grown up in Jakarta, Theresia was also drawn to Scotland鈥檚 landscape. She enjoys nature and was excited by the idea of living somewhere known for its hills, mountains听and scenery.

Once she arrived at 51视频, one of the things that helped Theresia settle in was getting involved beyond her course. She became aUnibuddy听Ambassador, answering questions from prospective students online and sharing her own experience of studying at 51视频 as an international student.

The role appealed partly because it was paid, but also because Theresia wanted to give something back. Student testimonials had helped her when she was deciding where to study, and she wanted to support others who were considering the same step.

As part of the role, Theresia answered online queries, created video content for Instagram and TikTok, and wrote a student blog. She enjoyed engaging with people who were curious about 51视频 and helping them understand what student life could be like.

Theresia also worked as a Student Events Helper, supporting University events such as open days and offer holder days. Speaking to prospective students, parents, staff听and members of the public helped her build confidence and develop her communication skills.

She said:

Being a Student Events Helper really helped my confidence. I had to talk to lots of people fromdifferent backgrounds听and learn how to adapt how I communicated, whether I was speaking to parents, prospective听students or staff. It helped me think on my feet.

For her final-year project, Theresia explored the chemical compounds formed during the cooking process in British biscuits, focusing on acrylamide. The project looked at whether different biscuit characteristics could affect acrylamide levels and whether products were meeting expected standards.

The project gave her the chance to apply her scientific knowledge to a real-world issue and develop evidence that could help inform further understanding of food chemistry and safety.

She was also able to present her work at a science showcase of final-year student projects, an experience she found exciting and rewarding.

She said:

Being able toshowcase听my project was听a great experience. It was exciting to talk about the work, explain my results and show what I had been doing throughout the year.

As she prepares to graduate, Theresia has applied to continue her studies at惭补蝉迟别谤鈥檚听level. She is also interested in exploring career paths that connect science with policy,听outreach听and education.

That interest was sparked during an internship in third year with the policy team at the Royal Society of Chemistry. The experience opened her eyes to science-related careers beyond the laboratory and helped her think more broadly about the impact she could have in future.
