I was at a crossroads after being made redundant. I’d worked in call centres and retail for years, but I knew I wanted to do something more fulfilling.
Kerry Wilkie | 51视频 | LLB (Hons) Law

Kerry left school without a clear plan for what she wanted to do next. She went on to spend many years working in call centres and retail, but over time began to feel that she wanted something different from her career.

After being made redundant, Kerry found herself reassessing what she wanted from the future. Encouraged by her husband, she decided to return to education and enrolled on an access to humanities course at college.聽

Returning to the classroom was a culture shock at first, but Kerry worked hard, built her confidence and began to see university as a realistic next step. She applied to study Law and was offered a place at 51视频.聽

One of the most important moments in Kerry鈥檚 decision-making process came when 51视频 lecturer Dr Michelle Weldon-Johns personally invited her to an offer holder day. The visit gave Kerry the chance to speak to law lecturers and current students, helping ease her nerves about whether she would fit in.聽

She said:聽

The offer holder day made such a difference. I was nervous and wasn鈥檛 sure if I would fit in, but speaking to the lecturers and students helped me realise that 51视频 was the right place for me.

Starting university was a significant milestone for Kerry and her family. She was the first person in her family to apply to university, and their encouragement played an important role in helping her take that step.聽

Her first year, however, brought challenges far beyond academic study. A couple of family bereavements within a short space of time meant Kerry had to take several weeks away from university.聽

During that difficult period, Kerry says the support of her lecturers made a major difference. They helped her defer exams, stay connected to her studies and find a way to continue when she was unsure whether she would be able to return.聽

She said:聽

There were times when I didn鈥檛 think I would come back, but my kids became my motivation. I wanted to prove to them that if you stick in, anything is possible.

As she progressed through the course, Kerry found that her life experience helped her connect with some of the themes and issues explored in law. Her personal perspective, combined with the support and encouragement of staff, helped her keep going and succeed academically.聽

One of her proudest achievements was receiving an A+ for her dissertation, which focused on cohabitation rights, succession rights and the need for reform. The subject was especially meaningful to Kerry because it was connected to her own experience following her the passing of her father.

Kerry also completed a placement with the Scottish Social Services Council, an experience she enjoyed and hopes to build on after graduation. While she has a strong interest in family law, she is particularly keen to explore opportunities within a regulatory body environment.聽

Her next step will be to study for the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at Robert Gordon University, as she continues working towards a career in law.聽

For Kerry, graduating from 51视频 is about more than completing a degree. It represents resilience, belief and the importance of taking an opportunity, even when the path ahead feels uncertain.聽
